Genre Research: Thriller

I am researching genres to try and find innovative ways to make our movie stand out. This is my research for the thriller genre.


The thriller movies I researched tend to have these angles and movements of the camera:

  • wide shot
  • pan
  • over the shoulder shot
  • action shot
  • full body shot
  • close up shot
  • high angle
  • low angle
  • bird’s eye view


Common Mis-En-Scene used in thriller movies:

  • costume: casual athleisure 
  • props: stopwatch, phone, weapons, 
  • acting: calm, quiet, secretive, suspicious 
  • setting: cities, homes, parks, 


Common Editing used in thriller movies:

  • fade in/fade out
  • insert
  • parallel editing
  • focus/unfocus
  • transitioning 


Common Sounds used in action films:

  • ambient sound
  • suspenseful/ intense music
  • voiceover
  • dialogue 
  • diegetic sound


    Movies I watched in the thriller genre:

    • The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
    • The Equalizer 3
    • The Killer
    • The Intrusion

    Elements of the Genre that I like:

    • The unpredictability of the genre keeps the audience hooked throughout the whole movie.
    • The suspense builds throughout the movies which leads to a great climax.
    • The rising action typically provides a great story in thriller movies.
    Elements of the Genre that I dislike:

    • It is difficult to always keep the audience engaged, it must be performed perfectly.
    • It's hard to make something original in this genre as so many popular movies share similar cliche stories.
    • These kinds of movies tend to be very lengthy which can be good but not always.

    Movie Research: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

      For the past week the group has been researching various thriller movies, the movie we're researching at the moment is the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.   The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (TCM) is a long term favorite amongst scare enthusiasts and has touched the hearts of millions of fans. However, the most recent installment of the series is poorly rated by many due to its poor storyline. The TCM is a scary film and has some notable scenes that draw out fear in the audience but lack of interesting storyline makes it bland and unentertaining. The TCM uses tracking shots, close-ups and inserts. The TCM also uses very detailed props and costumes to immerse audiences such as chainsaws and leather masks.   The TCM fantastically uses jump scares and music to intensify the film and it truly terrifies the audience.     Production Blog (Planning)

     Hey Blog. This week has not been much work yet. Me and my group have been talking trying to plan out our filming. We plan to meet and film soon. We have one issue that has risen as of recently. For our video to work out how we want it we're going to need a new person. We need one person to kidnap. One person to film. One person to drive the car at the beginning. And finally, one person to get kidnapped. We have no one that wants to be kidnapped at the moment. We have a couple people that we might be able to rely on. They are all in other classes. Meeting with them and getting something set up might be hard. We want to make the kidnapped person a girl. We feel as though the intro sequence would be a bit scarier if a girl was taken. I believe our group will meet soon. We do not have too much time as Anthony is very busy. Anyways, that is all for now. Bye blog.

    Planning Blog: Location, Participants, Health, Schedule

     Participants: Anthony Villegas Vasquez, Rene Salmeron Reyes, Julian Pacheco Location: Our group is quite fortunate when it comes to our location. We all have reliable transportation. We also live not too far from each other. Our houses are in good locations. We have chosen to film in Anthony’s area. We’re not sure of the exact location at the moment. Our film will take place at night though. Schedule:  By 02/20 we will be meeting consistently to properly plan out our filming  By 02/27 we will have begun filming our first takes of the intro sequence  By 03/05 we will have filmed everything and will soon begin editing  After these dates there are a few things still to be done. We will be editing the video alongside preparing for the CCR. Health: For the most part our film shouldn’t be too dangerous.
